Muslims in Syria slaughtered 15 Christians by launching rockets into a Christian neighborhood in Aleppo. Among those martyred was a Greek Melkite family of four who were crushed to death when a part of their apartment building collapsed on them. Their archbishop, Jean-Clément Jeanbart, had difficulty finding a suitable place to bury them, because the cemetery that the church was using is surrounded by snipers. Such disasters has led Jeanbart to make this disturbing and grim conclusion:
We could disappear.
When I think upon the state of the Church today, and how it is being so persecuted, I cannot help but contemplate on the relationship between the mystical Body of Christ, and the Holy Trinity. Islam is the enemy of the Holy Trinity, and so it attacks the Trinity by attacking the ones who represent the second Person of the Trinity: the Church, the Body of Christ, who Christ profoundly identifies Himself with. Christ suffers, and thus we suffer. The world hates Christ, and thus the world hates His Body. Why? Because the Church participates in Christ.
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
